This space is about video games. Both playing and making them.
Video games have been by far my longest-lasting hobby. I can't remember exactly when I started gaming, but it was in the early 90s, after my dad brought home our first PC. Among the first games I can recall playing are the amazing DOS classics Sokoban Mah Jongg and Captain Comic, which I never managed to beat to this day. I rarely make it past the bee-hive. But I watched in awe as my dad did.
With both my parents being programmers, I started dabbling in making my own games almost as soon as I discovered gaming as a pasttime. If you remember those magazines you could buy to then tediously type in the BASIC code for some Alien Invader clone: Congratulations, you're as old as me! From there, the road led me to coding in Turbo Pascal, then C++, Java, Python, C#, Kotlin, and nowadays I'm mostly using the fantastic FOSS Godot Engine. Along the way I've tried my hand at nearly every aspect of game development, except for audio, but what I like doing most is coding and computer graphics.
You would think that with about 30 years of game-development experience, I'd have an entire portfolio to show for it. Sadly, my personal path is lined with carcasses of unfinished projects. It was always too ambitious, suffered from scope creep or too many people involved to keep a consistent momentum going. But in the last decade or so, participating in the Global Game Jam has taught me a lot about scoping and getting a feel for what's realistic for me to handle. And I'm proud to say that one of the projects that started there has made its way to Steam for an actual release. So if you like my site, consider checking it out. We're a tiny team of three hobbyists and I would be thrilled if even a handful of people end up playing and enjoying BURST.
Check out BURST on Steam!
To see some other mini projects, also check out My GGJ Profile, or my old GGJ profile, which they are apparently unable to port for some reason.
