Why?

Why?

Like many people, I used to share what I'm doing on my various social media accounts. I had a Facebook, two Instagram and two Twitter accounts. I have gotten rid of all of them by now. The reasons for this are manifold, but mostly I've grown to despise how blatantly the tech-industry has been working towards undermining nearly all of the values that I hold dear. This includes, but is not limited to enabling turbo-capitalism, undermining labour rights, monopolising information, supporting fascists and fascism everywhere, stealing ideas and art from actually creative people, turning everything you do into a grift and many more. Letting these companies control what we create, how we share it, and who gets to see what is obviously extremely dangerous.

Sadly, 'the internet' has become synonymous with 'a handful of slop-machines designed for addiction' for too many people in too many places. That's why I decided I want to work on removing myself from these companies and toxicity as much as I can.

Nonetheless, I do love the positive sides of the internet. Being able to connect with friends and strangers far away, being able to share laughter and sadness, amazement or make somebody's day by leaving a nice comment. These aspects are worth trying to maintain, and this is what I miss since leaving my social media. For some aspects, I have created dedicated outlets, like for my photography, but there's no platform any more, where I can just dump a random thought, share a cool bit of code, or just do whatever comes to my mind.

This is the idea behind the site about me. Giving me a place to share random things I do and enjoy with the web. I'm not here to make money or compare myself to professionals. I just want to have my little corner of the web where people can learn things about me - if they really want to, not because some algorithm randomly decided to promote me. And if nobody sees it, I will at least have an archive of things I enjoyed for myself, even after the last social network has gone down and taken all the shared data with it.

Why now?

The day before I'm writing this, Feb 21 2026, I had a few things happen to me in short succession.

In the morning, I opened LinkedIn, which is always a mistake. I hadn't really been active there in over two years, but I am a bit of a puzzle-game addict, and they do offer some nice daily puzzles, which some of my friends also do. So a few weeks ago, I started wading into that AI-laden swamp of platitudes and corporate circle-jerking every morning to get some extra dopamine-hits. And every morning, I get to see the top post in my feed, before switching to the puzzles tab. And seeing that single post - usually the worst take on some issue you have ever heard, illustrated by an even worse AI slop cartoon - made me realise how little I want to engage with what is going on on that platform. But my CV and contact data is still on there, so I started wondering if there are any alternatives that are less toxic.

In the afternoon, I read this article on THE LOCAL STACK about how much data LinkedIn collects for verifying you're an actual human being. If you don't know, you should read it, too. Spoiler alert: it's a lot. Another nudge to keep thinking harder about eliminating my dependence on that platform.

Finally, shortly before going to bed, I stumbled across a video by onionboots about the IndieWeb. For once the almighty algorithm hit the nail on its head and served the video I needed to see at exactly the time I needed to see it. The idea of a truly user-controlled web, where everyone owns their own content instantly appealed to me.

So I started looking at some of the amazingly colourful, creative, quirky, informative and all-round positive sites that make up the IndieWeb and decided that I want to do something to contribute to the effort of wrestling some semblance of control back from the mega-corps.

You should definitely go check out onionboot's site, because it's pretty cool. See how far you get in background minesweeper. Also the link directory has a ton of pages that are helpful to get started on the Indieweb.
